Ghasideyeh Gave Sefid plot

Mina's life is turned upside down when she learns that her husband Babak was innocent of the crime for which he was executed. The authorities apologize for the mistake and offer financial compensation in prospect. Mina begins a silent battle against a cynical system for her own good and that of her daughter. Just as her money is running out, a stranger named Reza knocks on her door, saying he's coming to pay off a debt to Babak. Mina is reluctant at first, but increasingly lets Reza into her life, oblivious to the secret that binds them together.

This sensitive drama is in fact an indictment against the judicial system in Iran and against the death penalty in particular. It is astonishing to see how nonchalantly people deal with major errors in the judiciary.

A captivating story about a widow who not only battles the system, but at the same time has to face prejudice as a single mother. Iranian cinema at its best with impressive roles from both protagonists.

The title refers to a chapter in the Qur'an (Sura "The Cow") that is used to justify the death penalty as divine retribution. A white cow can also literally be seen on the prison yard.

There is a clear message in it. The death penalty is denounced, as are fundamentalism and the treatment of widows. Mina is financially vulnerable and has to raise a deaf and mute daughter, not to mention the emotional damage.

Reza's secret is revealed halfway through. This creates dramatic irony, because the viewer knows what Mina does not yet know. In the end, he doesn't know that she knows. The intrigue has similarities with Monster's Ball.

The style is sober and realistic. Camera movements are kept to a minimum. This makes it a bit slow and static. It has integrity, but lacks a bit of verve.

Still impressed by Iranian cinema.

The existence of the death penalty, the interference of Sharia in the judiciary and the subordination and powerlessness of women in this society are the themes around which the story is built.

Beautifully depicted, by the way, sober, quiet, supported by intimate music and absolutely excellent acting.
