A year after the death of a cousin, the illiterate and opium-addicted Esmail [Saeed Poursamimi] hopes to become the new patriarch of the family as the eldest uncle. When Bayram [Mehdi Hosseinina] finally appoints him as the family head, Esmail is obliged to give the largest gift (40 gold coins) at an outrageous wedding celebration. Daughter Leila [Taraneh Alidoosti] – the only family member with a solid income – believes Esmail is giving his family a hand in exchange for recognition and pressures him to use the money to help her four unemployed brothers run a shop to start. The opening (a violent confrontation between police and employees of a factory that has gone bankrupt) is promising and the wedding ceremony is also a visual feat. The acting of Poursamimi, Alidooster and Mahammadzadeh in particular (as the most pragmatic brother) is also excellent, but the rest of this more than 160 (!) minutes long family drama mainly consists of statically filmed conversations and discussions. Could have been an hour shorter.

Another gripping family drama by director/writer Saeed Roustaee (Abad Va Yek Rooz), this time about a family that is barely able to survive due to unemployment. can hold. The only daughter has an idea of how to improve the situation, but that does not match her father's ambitions. Intense drama in which tempers regularly run high. The performance of Taraneh Alidoosti (arrested by the Iranian regime at the end of last year) is particularly striking, but that is no longer a surprise.

I keep repeating it, but Iranian cinema fascinates me and is definitely in my top 10 of favorite film countries. Not only the older work of Kiarostami or the documentary style of Panahi, but also contemporary dramas that often provide an interesting insight into the cultural and religious practices of the strict Islamic state.

Interesting how a family with little financial means tries to run a shop together. Few are really successful at the moment. Not that people are always to blame for the situation. When your employer has not paid you for 8 months and social unrest breaks out in the factory, you have little choice. On the contrary, the compensations are very low and disproportionate to the work done, but protesting leads to no income at all or even benefits from the government. International sanctions or international geopolitical developments also play a role. Little subtle reference was therefore made to then-President Trump on TV.

Another brother has a litter of children and cannot find work either. Another is almost the black sheep with 12 trades, 13 accidents and especially a lot of debts. In addition, there is little cohesion or involvement from the parents themselves. No, there people are busy with their own social status in order to become pater familias of the family community. Only that status also costs money, not realizing that this is rather a poisoned gift.

The most level-headed of the gang is the sister. It struck me how impudent, even insulting, she could and was allowed to be towards her parents. The reproaches are not small. Her sincere, but bossy opinion towards her brothers was also often hit. Also a lot of bickering and arguing. There was little harmony. After two hours you would have seen it. Just a little too long to really catch on completely, but certainly not bad.
